Study abroad increases employment opportunities and salaries!

A survey recently released by the non for profit study abroad provider IES showed that US students who had done an international academic experience during their college/ university years had a higher employment rate and better salaries than those who didn’t. Out of the respondents, who graduated between 2006 and 2011, nearly 90% of study abroad alumni found their first jobs within six months of graduation compared to only 49% of recent college graduates in the general population who found jobs within a year; study abroad alumni earned $7,000 more in starting salaries, and 65% felt their first job was ‘very closely’ or ‘somewhat closely’ related to their majors. According to Dr. Mary M. Dwyer, this is due to the fact “that more and more employers are realizing the extraordinary benefits of study abroad, and are seeking out graduates who have had study abroad experiences. Key jobs skills such as adaptability, global understanding and tolerance, leadership, and independence are directly fostered by learning and living abroad.”
